Spellbound

The theremin is most widely associated with alien or supernatural genre movies. During the 1940s and 50s particularly it was heavily exploited as a means of creating a surreal atmosphere with its potential for producing an eerie vibrato which sounded nearly, but not quite, human. During the Golden Age of Hollywood the only man actually listed on the roster of the Los Angeles Musician's Union as being a thereminist was Samuel Hoffmann so the decision to use him on Miklos Rosza's score for Alfred Hitchcock's 1945 thriller Spellbound was a natural one.

It was an incredible debut soundtrack performance from Hoffman - Spellbound is a stunning psychological mystery thriller which has stood the test of time and is considered by many to be Hitchcock's finest movie, whilst  Hoffman and Rosza's use of the theremin is seen as a landmark achievement. The soundtrack in fact, won an Academy Award.
